Harry Hill Charity Live Streaming Production
A night of stand-up comedy has topped over 10,000 online viewers and raised over £8k to support local young people with disabilities to enjoy the arts.
Local comic Irving McCormick supported by the Cambridge Junction hosted a night of comedy streamed live across multiple social media platforms.
With comedy from Richard Herring, Harry Hill, Lost Voice Guy, Simon Panrucker, Jonathan Pie, Lucy Porter, Aaron Simmonds and The King’s Singers.
WaveFX were delighted to be involved and stream the two-hour event live from their new Cambridge studios. Lockdown has seen a demand from companies wanting help connecting staff and customers and WaveFX has the ability to stream six unique virtual events simultaneously using professional vision mixers with high production values.
This free charity event was streamed simultaneously to the Junctions Website from the WaveFX studio across multiple Facebook accounts and quickly gained a huge online engaged audience.
Donations are of course still welcome: www.justgiving.com/campaign/stand-up-with-irving
The client brief
The aim was to create an accessible online comedy night that could entertain a large audience while raising money to help local young people with disabilities enjoy the arts.
The line-up included Harry Hill, Richard Herring, Lost Voice Guy, Jonathan Pie, Lucy Porter, Aaron Simmonds, Simon Panrucker and The King’s Singers.
Viewers needed to be able to watch and interact through familiar online platforms without registering for a complicated event system.
“Facebook is the ideal platform for audience interaction, comments and sharing. We’ve streamed many events, conferences and shows and our clients have always been staggered by the level of engagement.
The key is obviously promotion and Facebook helps there as well allowing for events to be scheduled up to a week in advance. We’re delighted this charity event was so successful and continues to draw in much needed funds” Tom, Streaming Producer, WaveFX
Broadcasting from the WaveFX studio
The programme was produced and streamed live from our Cambridge studio. Presenters and performances were combined with event graphics, video content and donation information to create one continuous broadcast.
Our team managed the cameras, sound, lighting, live vision mixing and streaming throughout the two-hour show. The studio setup allowed each performance to move smoothly into the next while keeping the fundraising message visible.
The event was streamed simultaneously through the Cambridge Junction website and multiple Facebook accounts. This made the programme easy to find, watch and share while allowing viewers to comment and respond in real time.
Charity live streaming production challenges and how we addressed them
Producing a live programme with a large comedy line-up meant working to a carefully planned schedule. Each performer needed to appear at the right time without interrupting the pace of the show.
We created a detailed running order and prepared every contribution, graphic and video before the broadcast. Our production team managed the transitions live, allowing the performers to concentrate on their material.
Streaming to several online destinations also required close monitoring. Each outgoing feed was checked throughout the show, with backup recording and streaming systems ready if required.
The studio’s production infrastructure can manage up to six separate virtual events at the same time, giving the team the capacity and technical resilience needed for a busy live broadcast.
The measurable outcome
The charity webcast attracted more than 100,000 online viewers and raised over £8,000 to support young people with disabilities.
Streaming through multiple Facebook accounts and the Cambridge Junction website helped the event reach people well beyond a conventional venue audience. Comments, sharing and social interaction continued to build awareness during and after the live programme.
The result was an entertaining two-hour broadcast that brought together established performers, an active online audience and an important local cause.
