So no internet, no mains power, no problem… Welcome to the edge of the world
WaveFX demonstrated how off-grid live streaming can be delivered from a remote cottage in South West England without fixed internet or a conventional mains electricity supply.
The mobile production combined bonded 4G connectivity, independent power and a compact vision-mixing system, creating a complete webcast setup in a location where normal event infrastructure was unavailable.
The production challenge
Most webcasts rely on two essential services: a stable internet connection and dependable mains power.
This remote location offered neither.
WaveFX needed to establish enough upload capacity to support a live video stream while also generating the electricity required to operate the production equipment and recharge essential batteries.
The setup needed to:
- Establish reliable internet without fixed broadband
- Provide sufficient upload speed for live video
- Supply 240V electricity without mains power
- Operate a vision mixer and streaming encoder
- Recharge cameras, phones and drone batteries
- Remain compact enough for remote transport
- Work during winter conditions
- Allow the crew to monitor the stream throughout production
Location and audience
The webcast was produced from an isolated cottage in South West England.
The remote setting demonstrated that a venue does not necessarily need fixed broadband or permanent electrical infrastructure to support live production.
The online audience size and viewing platform were not recorded in the original project information. These details should be added if they remain available in the production records.
Connectivity
WaveFX used a Teradek Link Pro to combine available 4G mobile connections into a bonded internet service.
Bonding multiple connections provides greater bandwidth and resilience than relying on a single mobile network. At this location, the system achieved upload and download speeds of up to 50 Mbps.
This provided the connection needed to send the live programme from the cottage to its online destination.
Independent power
Electricity was supplied by a portable PowerOak unit capable of providing 300 watts of 240V power.
The unit could be recharged through solar panels or transported to a nearby mains supply when required.
It powered the central production equipment while also allowing the team to recharge:
- Camera batteries
- Drone batteries
- Mobile phones
- Supporting production equipment
Managing the available power was an important part of the production plan because every camera, network device and video system depended on a limited independent supply.
Production setup
The remote webcast production setup included:
- Teradek Link Pro bonded 4G connectivity
- Mobile network connections
- Speeds of up to 50 Mbps upload and download
- PowerOak independent power supply
- 300 watts of 240V electricity
- Solar recharging
- LiveStream HD550 vision mixer and encoder
- Cameras
- Drone equipment
- Mobile production monitoring
The LiveStream HD550 allowed the team to switch the programme and encode the outgoing webcast from a single compact unit.
Production risks addressed
Mobile connectivity can fluctuate as network demand, signal conditions and weather change. Independent power also introduces limits that would not normally affect a venue connected to the national grid.
WaveFX needed to monitor both connectivity and electricity throughout the production.
Bonded 4G reduced dependence on an individual mobile connection, while the portable power system allowed the essential equipment to continue operating without mains electricity.
Careful power management also ensured batteries could be charged without exceeding the capacity of the supply.
The measurable outcome
The production achieved bonded upload and download speeds of up to 50 Mbps from a remote location.
The independent power system delivered 300 watts of 240V electricity, providing enough energy to vision-mix and stream through the LiveStream HD550 while charging phones, cameras and drone batteries.
Together, these systems enabled WaveFX to operate a complete mobile webcast setup without fixed broadband or mains electricity.
