Empowering the Next Generation: STEM Webinar Production with Kari Byron
WaveFX partnered with EXPLR to produce a series of more than 40 live and recorded STEM webinars hosted by former MythBusters presenter Kari Byron.
Created over 12 months, the series introduced young people to astronauts, engineers, entrepreneurs and other STEM professionals, connecting classroom learning with genuine careers and experiences.
As EXPLR’s STEM webinar production agency, WaveFX managed the production process and prepared each programme for classroom viewing and digital distribution.
The client’s challenge
EXPLR provides educational video and curriculum resources for students, teachers and families. Its mission is to make learning relevant by helping young people understand how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are applied outside the classroom.
EXPLR needed a dependable production partner capable of creating a continuing programme of educational webinars rather than a single broadcast.
Each programme needed to:
- Make complex STEM subjects accessible to younger viewers
- Connect students with people working in real STEM careers
- Support live questions and audience participation
- Accommodate presenters and contributors joining remotely
- Maintain a consistent format across a large series
- Work effectively in classrooms and on digital learning platforms
- Provide recorded content for students unable to join live
Audience and locations
The webinars were created primarily for students in grades 6–12, classrooms and educators across the United States. They were also accessible to families and adults interested in STEM careers.
EXPLR’s educational service has been used in more than 500 schools across 23 US states, providing the series with access to an established network of students and teachers.
The remote webinar format allowed Kari Byron and specialist guests to participate from different locations while students joined from classrooms and homes across the country.
Platform and content delivery
The programmes were created for EXPLR and the National STEM Festival’s digital learning channels.
Students could join selected sessions live, submit questions and hear directly from STEM professionals. Recorded versions were then made available for on-demand viewing, extending the useful life of each programme beyond its original broadcast.
This combination of live participation and recorded educational content allowed teachers to use the sessions within different classroom schedules.
Webinar production setup
WaveFX provided live and recorded webinar production across the series, including:
- Pre-production planning
- Presenter and guest coordination
- Remote contributor management
- Webinar platform setup
- Live production support
- Video and audio management
- Programme branding
- Recording
- Post-production editing
- Preparation for classroom and digital delivery
The production approach created a consistent viewing experience while allowing every guest and subject to retain its own character.
Production challenges and how we addressed them
Producing more than 40 educational webinars required a repeatable workflow that could accommodate changing contributors, subjects and schedules.
Remote speakers may have different internet connections, equipment and levels of experience in front of a camera. Live sessions also leave little room to correct problems once a programme begins.
WaveFX’s production process helped address these risks through preparation, technical checks and active management during each session.
The team also had to balance scientific detail with a format capable of maintaining the attention of younger viewers. Clear sound, well-managed conversations and concise editing helped make the programmes suitable for classroom use.
The measurable outcome
During the 12-month collaboration, WaveFX produced more than 40 live and recorded educational videos for EXPLR.
Hosted by Kari Byron, the programmes connected students with astronauts, engineers, entrepreneurs and other specialists working across STEM industries.
The finished content gave EXPLR a substantial library of career-focused educational material that could be used during live events, in classrooms and through on-demand digital learning.
Jenny Buccos, CEO and founder of EXPLR, said: “We’re committed to meeting students where they are online, on their terms and connecting what they’re learning today to the careers of tomorrow. With WaveFX’s creative partnership and production expertise, we’re not just showcasing STEM careers—we’re opening doors for young people to see themselves in them.”
