Bringing degree apprenticeships to life through real stories

WaveFX created a promotional film for Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), featuring apprentices sharing their experiences of combining university study with working life. Through personal interviews and footage of work and learning, the film explores what an apprenticeship can offer: practical skills, growing confidence and opportunities to take a career forward.

The client’s challenge

Choosing a degree apprenticeship is a big decision. Prospective applicants need to understand how it could fit around their job, finances and personal commitments.

The film needed to make that experience relatable, using the voices of apprentices who could explain:

  • Why they chose the apprenticeship route
  • What earning while learning means to them
  • How their studies connect with their work
  • The support they receive from ARU
  • How the experience has changed their confidence and career prospects

Audience and location

The film speaks to people considering their next career step, whether they are developing within their current role or exploring a new direction.

Interviews are combined with footage from workplace and learning settings, giving viewers a sense of the people, activities and environments behind each story.

Our university video production approach

The apprentices’ own words lead the film. Their experiences give the audience a personal perspective on university study, professional development and balancing different responsibilities.

The finished production brings together:

  • Interviews with apprentices sharing their experiences
  • Supporting footage of work, study and practical activities
  • An edit organised around shared themes
  • Personal stories that build towards a positive closing message

By moving between contributors, the film shows how the same opportunity can mean different things to different people, from supporting a young family to returning to education or progressing at work.

Platform and content delivery

The film is featured on ARU’s degree apprenticeship page, alongside information about courses, eligibility and getting started.

It gives prospective apprentices an opportunity to hear directly from people who have taken that route, adding a personal perspective to the practical information on the website.

University video production challenges and how we addressed them

Bringing several personal stories into one short film requires a clear thread. Each contributor has a different background, but their experiences need to connect in a way that is easy to follow.

The edit moves through the reasons for choosing an apprenticeship, the relationship between work and study, the support available and the difference it has made. Supporting footage adds context to the interviews, helping viewers picture the experience for themselves.

The outcome

The result is a film that presents degree apprenticeships through the people experiencing them.

Contributors describe applying their learning at work, developing communication skills, taking on greater responsibility and discovering opportunities they had previously thought were out of reach. Together, their stories give ARU a personal introduction to its apprenticeship offer.
