Putting Boxing Fans at the Heart of the Action
Watching a boxing match is exciting. Feeling like you’re standing ringside is something else entirely.
Note: watch on YouTube for 360 experience
When Anthony Joshua defended his world heavyweight titles in Cardiff, we were asked to capture the atmosphere surrounding one of Britain’s biggest sporting events. Alongside traditional live coverage, we produced an immersive 360° experience, allowing fans to look around, explore every angle and enjoy the build-up in a completely different way. It was an exciting opportunity to combine live production with emerging 360° technology and create something genuinely memorable.
The Challenge
Filming in 360° changes everything. There isn’t a “good side” of the camera because every direction is visible. The crew, equipment and lighting all need careful planning, while the fast-moving nature of live sport leaves very little time to reposition or try again.
Our challenge was to capture the energy and excitement of fight week while creating an immersive experience that felt natural, engaging and easy to explore.
Sports Video Production Solution
Preparation was everything. Every camera position was carefully considered to give viewers the best possible perspective without distracting from the experience itself.
Working around a busy media schedule, we captured the atmosphere before the fight, behind the scenes and around the arena, producing a series of immersive 360° films that allowed fans to experience the event from entirely new viewpoints. Whether viewed on a mobile phone, desktop or VR headset, audiences could explore the action in their own way rather than following a traditional camera edit.
The Results
The finished production gave boxing fans a unique perspective on one of the biggest sporting events of the year. Instead of simply watching highlights, viewers became part of the experience, looking around the arena, soaking up the atmosphere and discovering details that would never appear in a conventional broadcast.
Projects like this helped demonstrate the creative possibilities of 360° video long before immersive content became more widely adopted.
What the Client Said
“We wanted to give fans something they’d never experienced before, and the finished 360° films did exactly that. The content generated a huge amount of interest and gave people a completely different way to experience fight week.” Stuart Loveridge, William Hill
From the Crew
This was one of those projects where everyone was learning something new. 360° production was still in its early days, so every shoot pushed the technology a little further. You quickly realise there’s nowhere to hide and every movement has to be planned, but that’s also what made it such an enjoyable project to be part of.
Our Advice
360° video works best when it puts people somewhere they couldn’t normally be. Live sport is a perfect example because the atmosphere is just as important as the action itself. If you’re thinking about immersive video, don’t just ask what you want to film. Ask where your audience would love to stand.
