Multi-Platform Live Streaming for the Bill Gates Malaria Summit
Important conversations need to reach beyond the conference room. When Bill Gates addressed Commonwealth leaders in London about the global fight against malaria, WaveFX helped share the event with approximately 500,000 viewers.
The five-day programme was streamed through the official Commonwealth website, Facebook and YouTube.
The client brief
WaveFX was brought into the project by event production company Glasgows to manage the online broadcast.
The summit coincided with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and brought together political leaders, health organisations, campaigners and international partners.
With content being distributed across several channels, the client needed one production team to manage the live feed, online platforms and viewer experience.
“WaveFX handled the streaming across every platform and made a complex five-day event feel completely under control. Reaching around 500,000 viewers was an excellent result, and we are really delighted with how smoothly everything ran.” Glasgows Production Team
Audience size and locations
The broadcasts attracted a combined online audience of approximately 500,000 viewers.
People watched from the UK, Commonwealth nations and other locations around the world. The online audience included public health professionals, government representatives, charities, campaigners and members of the public.
Platforms used
The live programme was streamed through:
- The official CHOGM website
- Several Facebook pages
- Multiple YouTube channels
- On-demand recordings after the event
Crossposting allowed the same live content to reach audiences already following the participating organisations, without asking everyone to visit one central platform.
Conference live streaming services
WaveFX managed the webcast as a white-label production partner for Glasgows.
The setup included:
- Multi-camera live coverage
- Live vision mixing
- Speaker names and event graphics
- Video playback and presentation content
- HD encoding
- Distribution across several platforms
- Independent monitoring of each destination
- Full programme recording
The production team created one consistent broadcast while preparing it for the different technical requirements of the website, Facebook and YouTube.
Production challenges and how we addressed them
The programme ran across five days and included high-profile speakers, presentations and live announcements. A detailed running order helped the crew prepare every video, graphic and speaker contribution in advance.
Streaming to several destinations meant that each output needed to be configured and monitored separately. The team checked the feeds throughout the event and maintained close communication with Glasgows and the wider production crew.
Viewers were joining from different countries, networks and devices. The stream was encoded to provide reliable playback without requiring specialist software.
Measurable outcome
WaveFX delivered:
- Five days of live event coverage
- Approximately 500,000 online viewers
- Distribution through a dedicated website
- Streaming across several Facebook and YouTube channels
- Global access across computers and mobile devices
- Recordings for continued on-demand viewing
During the summit, £2.9 billion was pledged to fight malaria. Commonwealth leaders also committed to halving the disease’s impact within five years, with the aim of preventing 350 million cases and saving 650,000 lives.
