Event Live Streaming for 12 Rules for Life

A sold-out venue is great news, but it also means plenty of people can’t get through the doors.

When the how to: Academy hosted Jordan Peterson at the Emmanuel Centre in London, WaveFX filmed and streamed the event to more than 29,000 unique Facebook viewers.

The client brief

The how to: Academy presents a programme of public talks featuring authors, scientists, business thinkers, philosophers and other leading speakers.

For this event, Jordan Peterson discussed ideas from his book 12 Rules for Life in front of a sold-out London audience.

The client wanted to extend the event beyond the venue while retaining the atmosphere and immediacy of the live talk. WaveFX was asked to film, vision mix and stream the complete programme directly to Facebook.

“WaveFX helped us take a sold-out London event to more than 29,000 online viewers. The filming and Facebook broadcast ran smoothly, and people watching from home felt part of the evening. We were delighted with the reach and response.” how to: Academy Production Team

Audience size and locations

The event played to a sold-out audience at the Emmanuel Centre, with more than 29,000 unique viewers joining through Facebook.

The online audience included viewers from across the UK and overseas, significantly increasing the number of people able to watch the talk.

Platform used

The complete programme was streamed through Facebook Live.

This allowed viewers to watch on computers, tablets and mobile phones while commenting on and sharing the broadcast. The recording remained available after the event, extending its reach beyond the live transmission.

Production setup

WaveFX provided a compact multi-camera production setup inside the venue.

The equipment and crew included:

  • Multiple cameras covering the speaker and stage
  • A portable 4K vision mixer and encoder
  • Live camera switching
  • Speaker titles and event graphics
  • Integration with the venue sound system
  • Facebook Live encoding and monitoring
  • A complete backup recording

The cameras captured close views of the speaker alongside wider shots showing the scale and atmosphere of the venue.

Event live streaming production challenges and how we addressed them

The production had to work for two audiences at once. Camera positions were selected to give online viewers a clear view without blocking sightlines for people inside the venue.

The webcast also had a fixed start time and a large Facebook audience waiting. The streaming connection, platform settings, sound and graphics were tested before the doors opened.

Lighting designed for a live audience can look different on camera. Our crew adjusted the camera settings and worked with the available stage lighting to maintain a clear, consistent picture throughout the talk.

Measurable outcome

WaveFX delivered:

  • Live coverage of a sold-out London event
  • More than 29,000 unique Facebook viewers
  • Multi-camera filming and live vision mixing
  • Graphics and professionally mixed sound
  • Viewing across computers and mobile devices
  • A complete recording for on-demand viewing

The webcast took an event limited by venue capacity and made it available to an audience many times larger than the room itself.
