WaveFX was commissioned by the International Churchill Society to film Gary Oldman in conversation with author and House of Lords member Michael Dobbs.

The interview explored Churchill’s legacy, Oldman’s preparation for the role and his award-winning performance in Darkest Hour.

The client brief

The International Churchill Society wanted to create an interview for its 38th International Churchill Conference, titled Churchill and Freedom.

With two experienced and knowledgeable contributors, the production needed to feel like a natural conversation rather than a formal question and answer session.

The finished film would be shown during the conference and made available to the Society’s wider international audience.

Audience size, locations and platform

The interview was shown to more than 1,000 conference viewers in the UK, North America and Europe.

It formed part of the International Churchill Conference programme and was also made available through the Society’s private online conference platform for remote and on-demand viewing.

Professional interview filming production setup

WaveFX used a three-camera interview setup, providing individual close shots of Gary Oldman and Michael Dobbs alongside a wider view of the conversation.

Professional lighting created a warm, natural setting, while discreet microphones recorded both speakers clearly. The production was managed by a compact crew, helping the filming environment remain calm and focused.

The complete conversation was edited with opening titles, speaker names and supporting images before being prepared for both conference playback and online viewing.

Production challenges and how we addressed them

The film schedule gave the crew a limited amount of time with both contributors. Cameras, lighting and sound were set up and tested before they arrived, allowing the interview to begin without delay.

As the conversation moved naturally between Churchill’s life, the making of Darkest Hour and Gary Oldman’s preparation for the role, each camera recorded continuously. This gave the editor a choice of angles while preserving the pace and flow of the discussion.

The film also needed to work on a large conference screen and for viewers watching online. Titles, images and audio were prepared with both settings in mind, ensuring the content remained clear on screens of every size.

Measurable outcome

WaveFX delivered a complete 30-minute interview in time for the 38th International Churchill Conference.

The film reached more than 1,000 conference and online viewers across three regions. Additional short edits gave the Society content that could be shared separately after the event.

The finished interview brought together two distinctive perspectives on Winston Churchill and created a lasting addition to the Society’s video archive.
