When the The Auction Ring Went Digital
For more than 250 years, Tattersalls has welcomed buyers from around the world to Newmarket, where every nod, every bid and every sale takes place in the famous sales ring.
Then everything changed.
With travel restrictions preventing buyers from attending in person, one of the world’s most prestigious bloodstock auctions faced an unprecedented challenge. The horses couldn’t wait, the sale couldn’t be postponed and buyers still needed complete confidence to bid from anywhere in the world.
The answer wasn’t simply to stream the auction. It was to recreate the entire experience online.
Virtual Auction Streaming Challenges
An auction isn’t like a conference or a webinar.
Every second matters.
Bidders need to see the horse clearly, hear the auctioneer without delay and have absolute confidence that what they’re watching is live. Even the smallest technical issue could affect a sale worth thousands or even hundreds of thousands—of pounds.
For Tattersalls, reliability wasn’t just important. It was everything.
The Solution
Working from the famous Tattersalls sales ring, our crew built a complete broadcast workflow around the auction itself.
Professional cameras captured every horse as it entered the ring, while our live production team streamed the two day sale directly to the online auction platform and social media. Buyers around the world could follow every lot in real time, giving them the confidence to bid remotely while preserving the familiar pace and atmosphere of a traditional Tattersalls sale.
Rather than changing the auction to suit the technology, we made sure the technology supported the auction.
The Results
The February Sale proved that one of the world’s oldest auction houses could successfully embrace a completely new way of selling.
Buyers were able to participate from around the globe without travelling to Newmarket, ensuring the sale continued despite extraordinary circumstances. More importantly, it demonstrated that live production could enhance traditional auctions while protecting the trust and confidence they are built upon.
The success of virtual horse auctions has since helped shape the future of bloodstock sales, with online participation now forming an important part of the buying experience.
What the Client Said
“The professionalism of the WaveFX team gave us complete confidence throughout the sale. The production was seamless, reliable and allowed buyers around the world to participate exactly as we had hoped.” Peter Harmer, Tattersalls
From the Crew
Horse auctions have their own rhythm. Once the auctioneer starts, there’s no stopping to solve a problem or replay a moment. We loved the pressure because every member of the crew knew exactly what was at stake. Watching bids arrive from across the world while standing in an almost empty sales ring was something none of us will forget.
Virtual Auction Streaming Advice
If you’re planning a live auction, think beyond the cameras. Buyers need confidence as much as they need pictures. Reliable streaming, clear audio and careful planning are what allow people to bid with complete trust, wherever they are in the world.
