Government Event Live Streaming from Buckingham Palace

When leaders from across the Commonwealth gathered in London and Windsor, WaveFX joined the production team for seven days of live broadcasts, forums and formal ceremonies.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting brought together representatives from 53 member countries to discuss shared international challenges. One of the week’s highlights was a formal gathering hosted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

The client brief

WaveFX worked on behalf of Glasgow’s, an award-winning event management and technical production agency.

The brief was to film and webcast key moments from the summit across Facebook, YouTube and LiveStream. Each programme needed to reach audiences around the world while meeting the careful technical and scheduling requirements of a high-profile international event.

The Commonwealth represents a combined population of approximately 2.4 billion people. The broadcasts were created for viewers across all 53 member countries, with the official opening alone attracting more than 580,000 views.

“Crossposting allowed us to broadcast across several Facebook pages without needing separate encoders, helping the official opening reach more than 580,000 viewers.” Jamie Huckle, Producer, WaveFX

Filming and streaming the summit

WaveFX supplied an experienced filming and webcast crew for the full seven-day production.

Multiple cameras captured speeches, formal ceremonies, forums and audience reactions. The feeds were combined with event graphics and presentation content through a live vision mixer before being encoded for each online platform.

The programmes were streamed to Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn, giving international viewers a choice of familiar ways to watch.

Facebook’s live crossposting feature was used to share a single broadcast across several official pages. The opening ceremony appeared on the Buckingham Palace Facebook page and the Commonwealth’s own channels at the same time, without requiring a separate outgoing stream for every page.

Government event live streaming challenges and how we addressed them

The summit involved several venues, a busy programme and speakers whose schedules allowed very little flexibility. Every camera position, cable route and streaming connection had to be prepared around strict access and security arrangements.

Detailed production schedules were agreed in advance with the wider technical team. Equipment was installed and tested within the available access windows, with crew members assigned clear responsibilities for filming, sound, streaming and monitoring.

Delivering to three online platforms created different technical requirements. Separate outputs were prepared and monitored throughout each broadcast to ensure the picture, sound and graphics were reaching viewers correctly.

Local recordings and backup encoding systems were also maintained, protecting the content if an individual platform or connection experienced an interruption.

The measurable outcome

WaveFX successfully supported seven days of government event live streaming across London and Windsor.

The broadcasts included the formal opening, public forums, official ceremonies and events attended by members of the Royal Family and leaders from 53 Commonwealth nations.

The official opening reached more than 580,000 viewers through Facebook, with additional audiences joining through YouTube and LinkedIn

The project demonstrated how one professionally produced programme could be distributed efficiently across several international channels.
