Telling a Story That Really Matters

Some projects stay with you long after the cameras have been packed away.

When Microsoft invited us to travel to Malawi, our job wasn’t simply to make another corporate film. We were there to document the remarkable work being carried out to help tackle malaria, connect rural schools through technology and support local communities. It was a project that combined documentary filmmaking with real human stories, showing the positive impact technology can have in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

Charity Documentary Production Challenge

Filming in rural Malawi brought challenges that couldn’t be solved with a bigger camera or a larger crew. Long journeys, extreme heat, limited infrastructure and constantly changing locations meant every day required careful planning and plenty of flexibility.

More importantly, we wanted the documentary to focus on the people rather than the technology. The real story wasn’t about equipment or software—it was about communities, education and lives being changed for the better.

The Solution

Our approach was simple: spend time listening before pressing record.

By following Microsoft’s team into schools, villages and community projects, we captured genuine moments as they happened. Interviews were kept natural, the filming unobtrusive and the storytelling centred around the people whose lives were being affected by the programme.

Rather than producing a traditional corporate film, we created a documentary that allowed audiences to see the challenges, the progress and the hope for themselves.

The Results

The documentary became one of the projects we’re most proud of and went on to receive industry recognition for its storytelling. More importantly, it helped share an important message with audiences around the world, demonstrating how technology, education and healthcare can work together to create meaningful change. The experience also left a lasting impression on everyone involved in the production.

What the Client Said

“I am so proud of the fantastic work you did in support of the CSS community project. My wholehearted and personal thanks to you for the amazing impact that you have helped make on the people of Malawi.” John Nielsen, Microsoft

From the Crew

There are projects you enjoy, and then there are projects that genuinely change your perspective. Spending time in Malawi was one of those experiences. We came away with some incredible footage, but more importantly, a huge respect for the people we met and the difference the project was making in their communities.

Charity Documentary Production Advice

The most memorable documentaries don’t begin with a camera, they begin with curiosity. Spend time understanding the people, the culture and the story before you think about filming. Audiences connect with honesty, and that’s something no amount of production value can replace.
