UK’s First Dutch Roundabout: Explaining a £2.3 Million First

It’s not every day a project changes the way an entire country thinks about road design.

When Cambridgeshire County Council prepared to open the UK’s first true Dutch-style roundabout, they faced a unique challenge. Millions of drivers had never encountered one before, yet from the day it opened everyone would be expected to understand exactly how it worked.

Rather than relying on leaflets or technical drawings, the council wanted to show people. We were commissioned to create a series of 3D animations, interactive experiences and 360° visualisations that explained the new junction clearly and confidently before the first car even drove across it.

The Engineering Animation Challenges

This wasn’t simply an animation project.

It was a public information campaign.

Every vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian had to behave exactly as they would in real life, while the animation itself needed to remain easy to follow for viewers of all ages and experience. There was no room for artistic licence because the film would become the public’s first introduction to a completely new piece of transport infrastructure.

The Solution

Working closely with Cambridgeshire County Council, we transformed detailed engineering drawings into a realistic virtual environment that anyone could understand.

To make every movement feel natural, Chris, our lead animator, developed bespoke Unreal Engine plug-ins capable of simulating realistic traffic flow. Vehicles slowed naturally, cyclists interacted correctly with motorists and pedestrians moved confidently through the junction, creating an animation that was not only visually engaging but technically accurate.

Alongside the main animation, we also produced interactive 360° content, allowing viewers to explore the junction from different perspectives before it officially opened.

The Results

The response exceeded everyone’s expectations.

The animation was featured by BBC News, ITV News, Sky News and many of the UK’s national newspapers such as The Sun and  Metro. It was also picked up internationally by publications including Forbes and BuzzFeed, introducing the UK’s first Dutch-style roundabout to millions of people around the world.

More importantly, it helped local residents approach a completely unfamiliar road layout with confidence, proving just how powerful animation can be when the goal is education rather than promotion.
